As you begin exploring your egg donor options, you’ll notice that donors are grouped into two tiers: Pre-Screened and Proven. It’s one of the first distinctions Intended Parents come across, and understanding what it means makes choosing a donor far less confusing.

Both tiers are thoroughly vetted, and neither is simply “better” than the other. The right choice depends on what matters most to you, your budget, and how you weigh a documented track record against a wider range of choice. Here’s how the two compare.

Fertility Match is a Canadian egg donation matching agency that connects Intended Parents with carefully screened donors, founded by people who understand this journey firsthand. Helping you understand your choices is part of how we make the journey feel manageable.

What every donor has in common

Before looking at the differences, it helps to know what Pre-Screened and Proven donors share. Every donor listed in our program has already completed the same core vetting:

  • An extensive application
  • A video screening call with our team
  • Complete health and family medical documentation
  • Signed donor waivers and program agreements

On top of that, every donor’s profile lives in Canada’s Most Advanced Donor Database, their travel is booked by Fertility Match, and their reimbursable expenses are managed through a trust account. In other words, whichever tier you choose, you’re selecting from donors who have been carefully screened and prepared.

What "Pre-Screened" means

A Pre-Screened donor has completed all of the vetting above and is fully ready to move forward, but they have not completed a donation cycle or have ever been pregnant. She’s been thoroughly assessed, but there isn’t a past donation on record or fertility history to look back on. Many wonderful, highly suitable donors are Pre-Screened simply because they’re new to donating.

What "Proven" means

A Proven donor has donated before, which means two extra pieces of information are available to you: her previous donation records, and a track record showing she responded well to the stimulation medication in a past cycle. For some Intended Parents, that history offers an added layer of reassurance.

The real difference between the two

Stripped down, the distinction comes to one thing: donation history. A Proven donor gives you data from a completed cycle, while a Pre-Screened donor is fully vetted but donating for the first time. Because of that added history, the consulting fee differs between the two tiers, with Proven donors carrying a higher fee. Neither status, though, is a guarantee of any particular outcome; that always depends on many factors your fertility clinic will assess.

Which tier is right for you

There’s no universal answer, only the one that fits your priorities. As a rough guide:

  • A Proven donor may suit you if a documented track record and prior-cycle data give you added peace of mind, and the higher fee fits your budget.
  • A Pre-Screened donor may suit you if you value a broader range of choice and a different fee tier, and you’re comfortable moving forward with a donor who is fully screened even without a past cycle.

Many families find their perfect match in either tier. What matters most is usually the connection you feel with the person behind the profile.

How Fertility Match helps you choose

You don’t have to weigh all of this alone. Our team works alongside you to navigate the database and think through which tier and which donor fits your hopes, your circumstances, and your budget. Our guide on how to choose an egg donor offers a helpful framework, and once you’ve chosen, the fertility clinic takes over the medical screening and the rest of the clinical process.

Understanding the two tiers turns a confusing first impression into a clear, confident choice.
