Every Intended Parent hopes their donor journey will unfold smoothly from match to retrieval, and the vast majority do exactly that. But because donors are real people with real lives, there’s always a small chance that a matched donor has to step away before the cycle is complete. The Donor Replacement Program exists for precisely that situation.

It’s an optional safeguard, and its whole purpose is to make sure an unexpected change doesn’t force you to start your journey over. Here’s what it is, how it works, and why many Intended Parents choose to add it.

Fertility Match is a Canadian egg donation matching agency that connects Intended Parents with carefully screened donors and protects every donor’s privacy, founded by people who understand this journey firsthand. Protecting the investment you make in your journey is part of that commitment.

Why a donor might not be able to proceed

We stay in close, ongoing contact with our donors and take real care to confirm each one’s commitment before a match. Even so, life is unpredictable, and occasionally a donor finds she can no longer continue for reasons entirely outside anyone’s control. When it happens, it’s usually because of a genuine life change, such as:

  • The illness of a loved one
  • A new education or employment opportunity
  • Other unforeseen personal circumstances

This is rare, but it’s real, and it’s worth understanding before you begin.

What the Donor Replacement Program does

If your matched donor is no longer able to move forward, the Donor Replacement Program lets you choose a new donor without losing the ground you’ve covered. With the program in place, Fertility Match will substitute a donor of your choice from the same tier you originally chose, or a lesser tier, without charging any additional agency consulting fees for the new match.

In practice, that turns a disheartening setback into a manageable step, so your path to parenthood continues rather than resets.

How it works

The program is straightforward, and the key points are:

  • It’s optional, and it’s added at the time you secure your donor, for an additional fee
  • If your donor can no longer proceed, you select a replacement from the same or a lesser donor tier
  • There are no additional agency consulting fees for that replacement donor
  • The full terms and conditions are set out in your Agency Agreement

Is it worth it?

That’s a personal decision, and it comes down to how you feel about risk. The chance of a donor withdrawing is small, but if it did happen, re-matching without the program could involve additional fees. For many Intended Parents, the modest cost of the program buys real peace of mind at a stage of life where certainty is precious. For others, the low likelihood makes it optional. Either way, it’s helpful to make the choice deliberately rather than by default.

Where it fits in your journey

The Donor Replacement Program is one part of a process designed to keep your journey moving. Once your donor is secured, the fertility clinic handles the medical screening and clearance, and Fertility Match coordinates the appointments, travel, and reimbursable expenses through to the retrieval. Our overview of the egg donation process in Canada shows how the pieces fit together, and you can explore your options further on our Intended Parents’ process page.

Taking the next step

No one wants to dwell on the possibility of a donor stepping away, but knowing there’s a safeguard in place lets you move forward with more confidence. The Donor Replacement Program is there so that a rare, unlucky turn doesn’t cost you the progress you’ve made. If you’d like to understand whether the program is right for your journey, contact Fertility Match today.
